Blob Museum

This year we will celebrate the 60th anniversary of the classic 1958 film The Blob, the first starring role for Hollywood legend Steve McQueen. The Blob is a mainstay in classic 50s science fiction and horror and is one of the most known films in the genre, spawning a couple sequels and remakes as well as being a staple on TCM. The Blob is considered one of the great masterpieces of B-rated sci-fi.

The following original items from The Blob will be on display:

  • The actual silicone monster, displayed in its original storage container
  •  Miniature sets and props
  • Original movie posters

We will also be hosting a screening of the original film The Blob on Sunday afternoon.

About The Curator

Wes Shank,  refers to himself as ” the caretaker of the original blob silicone”.  He began collecting movie posters and publicity photos in 1960.   The silicone used to create the movie monster in the 1958 movie THE BLOB was his first prop in his collection.  After touring the Valley Forge Film Studios in 1965, Wes purchased the silicone directly from the film’s director, Shorty Yeaworth.   In addition to the silicone, Wes owns several miniature sets used in making the movie and other Blob memorabilia,  Some of his other prized items in his collection include props and costumes from  Forbidden Planet (1956), Planet Of The Apes (1968), and  The Wizard Of Oz (1939).

Wes is always willing to share his knowledge of  science fiction movies and  has lectured at The Franklin Institute, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and Villanova University, as well as various television interviews over the years.

Wes is also the author of From Silicone To The Silver Screen, a collection of memoirs from both the cast and crew who were involved in creating the science fiction cult classic The Blob (1958). 120 pages (8 1/2″ by 11″) with over 100 photographs and illustrations (both color and black and white). Make sure to pick up a copy of the book as well while at the Grand Rapids Comic-Con.
